ITEM DESCRIPTION:

A silent killer took my Mom - heart disease. I designed this heart pin as a tribute to my Mom’s memory and to bring awareness to the health disparities in our health care system. My hope is it will generate conversations so we can begin to address the disparities and bias in health care. Did you know African Americans face a greater risk of heart disease than any other ethnic group?

According to the Heart Foundation, 47% of African American women and 45% of African American men have some form of heart disease. Did you know only 60% of African Americans adults say they trust doctors to do what is right most of the time, compared with 80% white people.

Research shows African American patients are more at risk to receive lower quality health services. Did you know only 5% of doctors in America are Black?

We need more diversity in health professions. This heart pin and BLM charm are handcrafted with sterling silver and copper. The two faces are made from copper, hammered and then drizzled with silver and finished with a light rustic patina matte finish to represent the disparities in the health care system. The EKG symbol was added to symbolize power, strength, endurance, and the ability to keep moving forward when events in this world keep holding you back.

The pin is ~2.25 inches long and ~1.25 inches wide. Thank you for supporting this auction.
