ITEM DESCRIPTION: This piece is a reminder to turn our attention, intention, and action towards what matters, and to never underestimate our ability to work together to make change. Recent elections have shown yet again what is possible when BIPOC-led grassroots organizers work collectively to reach and empower people to vote, even in the face of massive disinformation and egregious, targeted voter-suppression tactics.

Ida B. Wells-Barnett and John Lewis are both determined and endlessly inspiring people with powerful, moving legacies in American history, including in regards to Black voting rights. I chose quotes by them that I hope will remind viewers not just of their personal power to implement change through voting and other civic engagement, but also of our collective responsibility to work to right wrongs and continue to build a world with true equity and justice for all.

Quotes read: “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” -Ida B. Wells-Barnett

“You are a light. You are the light.” -John Lewis

Largely bronze with fine silver, sterling silver, and steel components, this hand-fabricated brooch is just over 3.25 inches long and just under 2.25 wide. The 23mm tiger’s eye is a chatoyant gemstone from the quartz family that is said to protect from negative energies, center and ground personal energy, dispel fears, and help focus the mind.
