ITEM DESCRIPTION: This piece was inspired by a personal experience of having gone through two difficult pregnancies with the second landing me in the ER after physicians refused to properly treat me, and my son later had to stay in the NICU for a month. Black women are constantly being disregarded in health care and experience systems of oppression. The trauma sometimes does not stop after birth, unfortunately. Black women may experience medical-interaction induced trauma, due to not feeling heard or listened to by their healthcare provider, and further advocating for their baby’s health is another struggle.

To any of my Black & Brown parents, especially moms, reading this, do yourself and your children a favor and find a doctor that looks like you if possible. This will better your chances at being heard, and in turn, increase yours and your baby’s chance for survival. It has been proven that Black infant mortality rates drastically decreased when cared for by Black doctors. Never be afraid to speak up and advocate for yourself and your babies, and it's ok to find a new doctor if you think your current provider is not listening.

My piece is of a stork carrying a baby-pouch with the words "BLACK BABIES MATTER" stamped around the bag. The bag is kinetic and swings from left to right, but not in a complete 360. All sterling silver. Measures 4.5cm x 5cm.
