Item description:

For Cynthia I wanted to make something with books, since they were at the center of her working life, and she loved writing and research. The largest book is a representation of the Bible in gold. Cloisonné enamel on copper, with silver and gold foil. Set in sterling silver with a sterling chain, and citrine and carnelian beads. Pendant is 1.75" x 1.5", chain length is 24".

Cynthia Graham Hurd was a librarian in Charleston for over 30 years. Her brother described her as the matriarch of the family, and said she cared about her community, her church, and her God. The library she managed at the time of her death has been renamed for her.
