Item description:

I chose to honour Baynard Rustin for my Big 6 Auction piece. He was a gay African American civil rights pioneer. He moved to New York in the 1930’s and he was involved in pacifist groups and early civil rights protests. These were in line with his personal philosophy and was able to combine the pacifism of the Quaker religion, which is the non violent resistance taught by Mahatma Gandhi, and the socialism supported by African American labour leader A. Phillip Randolph. Rustin was a civil rights organizer and activist, best known for his work as an adviser to Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1950’s & 1960’s. He also worked with Randolph During the Second World War fighting against racial discrimination in war related hiring. My piece was inspired by this quote from him “We need in every community a group of angelic trouble makers”. I stamped this quote onto .925 sterling silver and set a sparkly white fused glass cabochon on the other side, it has a naturally shed whitetail deer antler. A sacred animal with the spirit of gentleness and softness, a messenger, a shaman. Like a crown, the antlers grow beyond its body, bringing it closer to the sky and making it sacred. During a deer's life the antlers fall off and grow again the animal is also a symbol of regeneration.
