This brooch is in illustration of woman reaching one arm out to display a heart and a heartbeat line to symbolize healthcare. The illustration style can be traced back to my earlier printmaking work, which depicted feminine figures who were bending and moving to remind myself that I “bend, but do not break”.
It is important as a black woman to advocate for yourself and your needs, especially in healthcare. This advocacy can be strengthened by having a community of other folks to stand by you and help you find healthcare facilities that have your best internet at heart. This brooch represents that necessity to reach out and help others live their healthiest lives.
