When selecting an auction to participate in, I felt strongly that I needed to participate in the Black Trans Lives Auction. So often the contributions of Trans individuals are overloooked and undersupported, so I really wanted to support them. I chose to center this piece around Riah Milton an individual that was dead named and misgendered by police and reporters after her murder. Her resiliency and desire for acceptance struck me and I couldn't shake it. I saw several articles refer to her statement, " Never been scared to struggle, Imma get it eventually" so I centered my piece around that statement. A statement or resilience and perseverance. I chose to use copper, what metalsmiths often call a dirty metal, because I found a symbolic comparison. People so often call trans folx dirty when, like copper, they are the warmest and most beautiful of us. If only we could all be resilient like Riah, we might managed to change this fucked up world. This piece features sterling silver, copper, smoky quarts, and the words of Riah Milton.
